First there was JamboWorks, then IVIVIO. Now this Spacemonkey Laboratories business. What gives?
Spacemonkey Laboratories (SML) was actually first, as it was a nickname I earned more than a decade ago. I found myself doing freelance work and needed an email address and a website, and that seemed to be a good name that was bizarre enough for people to remember, but also bizarre enough for nobody to fight me over.
In 2005 I was quite active on the core team for the Mambo Open Source project. I decided to join forces with two other teamsters, Andrew Eddie and Andy Miller. As SML was not the desired name for my new partners, we combined my SML and Andy's MamboDev into a new entity called JamboWorks.
NOTE: That August was the historical turning point for us all, where the entire Mambo team, from development and documentation all the way to PR and forum administration all decided as one complete group to leave Mambo and form Joomla, backed by a true non-profit called Open Source Matters.
That winter, it became pretty obvious to us at JamboWorks that Andy's Template Club was enjoying phenomenal success; and grew to the point that we feared the brand would be known specifically for Joomla templates. That wasn't really the direction Andrew and I wanted to go, so we all agreed that it made the most sense for Andy to spin off his success to a dedicated business, which lead to the formation of RocketTheme.
While this was going on, we were also growing - adding other Joomla core members Louis Landry, Arno Zijlstra, and Robin Muilwijk.
In 2006 we decided to reincorporate for a variety of reasons, and took the liberty of rebranding. This was when IVIVIO was born.
In 2007, after a lot of thought, we unanimously decided to separate and go our own ways, as we had all determined that we were each pulling in a slightly different direction. As such, you now have a host of new companies, and SML which is somewhat of a rebirth of a very old one. When you look at the final lineup of IVIVIO, you have the following businesses:
